Grand Canyon of Texas Should I tell you ….? Oke, here it is, I wasn’t that impressed with the Grand Canyon. Maybe because it was at the end of a four-week trip. Almost certainly it was because I didn’t descend into the Canyon itself. But in the end, the Grand Canyon wasn’t one of my favourites. So I was obligated to visit the second largest canyon in the country, which lies in the heart of the Texas Panhandle. Palo Duro Canyon State Park let me experience the canyon’s rugged beauty and enjoy its colourful history. The park has more than 30 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails. What I liked most was the small-scale operation of the park. Certainly not crowded. Early in the morning, I enjoyed the Lighthouse Trail. I was the only one on the way to this gigantic rock formation and enjoyed the silence. On my way back I encountered the first other hikers. I was baffled by the fact that most didn’t bring little to no extra water and were dressed like they were visiting the beach. I wouldn’t feel safe in the desert with no extra water or sunscreen backup, but maybe I’m too cautious.
